ORIGIN :

Created in 1860 to help develop the Champs Elysees and changed to an association February 14, 1916 by Louis Vuitton to defend and promote the most beautiful avenue of the World, the Syndiate for the Initiative and the Defense of the Champs Elysees was transformed into the Friends of the Champs Elysees and then in 1980 into the Champs Elysees Committee.
The Champs Elysees Committee is today the only association representative of the local businesses of the Champs Elysees vis a vis the administration and public authorities.

WHO IS A MEMBER

. 165 businesses and companies which represent 95 percent of the facades of the Champs Elysees, 100 percent of the terraces and concessions accorded on the champs Elysees and more than 20 million of the clients-users of this avenue.
. To its traditional members, are added a certain number of persons, inhabitants and sympathizers, or approximately 200 members.
. It is attached to no federation and does not depend financially on any others than its members dues, without any sponsor. This policy insures its total independence not only vis a vis private interests but also with respect to lobbies.
. It is managed by an elected board. This is composed of 15 active members, all residents of the Champs Elysees, and in permanent contact with its members who have given them their mandate. This board has elected Mr. Roland Pozzo di Borgo as its president since 1985.
.The boards actions are realized by the President and his team, all volunteers.
After the death of Mr Pozzo di Borgo, the new president is Mr Jean Deleplanque, the vice President is Mr Gutten and the general delegate Mrs Rodet.

ITS MISSION :

1. To adapt into daily practice of the Most Beautiful Avenue in the World to the natural evolution of society in order to conserve a harmonious domination and its world class reputation.
2. To insure that one and all respect the prestige of the Champs Elysees-including legally.
3. To assist in insuring a better security and a better presentation of the exteriors of the Champs Elysees, by continually chasing away all nuisances working in direct collaboration with the Prefecture of Police and City Hall.
4. Inform French media of the actions of the Champs Elysees Committee and insure of the reputation of the Champs Elysees with foreign media.
5. To Involve members, by the newsletter, contacts and journal, of all of the cultural manifestations (events) and actions destined to promote the Champs Elysees.

115 IMPORTANT MEASURES TAKEN BY OUR ASSOCIATION

1. Illuminations: Creation of the "Illuminations of the Champs Elysees' as requested by our committee in 1981
2. Creation of a free internal newsletter, distributed to all members since 1986
3. A meeting of all members at a General Assembly once a year
4. Investigation and study on rents: on-going and permanent survey
5. Obtained special deferment of TVA for businesses after the terrorist attacks in 1986
6. Removal of barricades on the champs Elysees in August1988
7. Stopped towing of foreign-tagged vehicles
8. Legal case won in the Conseil d'Etat concerning the esthetics of the Champs Elysees
9. Reduction in unauthorized posting of bills
10. Codification of the real estate boundaries for establishing terraces.
11. Opening of summer terraces; special authorizations based on weather (early summer etc.)
12. Improvement in welcome services for foreign tourists on the Champs Elysees
13. Flowers on the Champs Elysees
14. Participated in the restoration of the Arc de Triomphe. The Committee hosted the official reception in December 1988.
15. Organized the security in liaison with the Prefecture for the Bicentennial celebrations on the Champs Elysees in 1989.
16. Established a press office at the Tourist Bureau on the Champs Elysees for the Bicentennial of the French Revolution.
17. Oversaw the preparation of the 'Great Harvest' organized on the Champs Elysees June 24, 1990.
18. Fight against all nuisances on the Champs Elysees.
19. Establishment of a security commission.
20. Intervened with the Prefecture to stop unauthorized street vendors.
21. Police foot patrols as requested since 1990.
22. Coordination of joint actions for the renovation of the Champs Elysees.
23. Established the work schedule for the renovation work on the champs Elysees in cooperation with the City of Paris.
24. Establishment of the new regulations concerning terraces in cooperation with the City of Paris.
25. Coordination of the work concerning the dismantling and re-building of the covered terraces of restaurants.
26. Study on the compensation due the terraces that were removed.
27. Project for summer double terraces.
28. Study of the colors of the awnings for the stores on the Champs Elysees.

77. Creation of secondary summer terraces, April 1995.
78. Coordination of the events and ceremonies surrounding the 50th anniversary of May 8, 1945.
79. Cooperation with the Caisse Nationale des Monuments Historique et des Sites (National Fund for Historic Monuments and Sites)
and the Tourist Office for information for tourists.
80. Organization of the events to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Committee des Champs Elysees.
81. Creation and organization of a now-annual fundraising gala to benefit the Claude Pompidou Foundation.
82. September 3, 1995: first gala with the grand opening of the film "Bridges of Madison County" at the UGC Normandie, starring Clint Eastwood and in the presence of Clint Eastwood and under the auspices of French President Jacques Chirac.
83. Gala dinner at Le Doyen and remittal of a check in the amount of 1.3 million Francs to Madame Pompidou for her foundation.
84. Grand opening of the film "Le Hussard sur le Toit" at UGC Normandie, starring and in the presence of Juliette Binoche, Olivier Martinez and Jean-Paul Rappeneau, followed by a dinner at Le Doyen, under the auspices of Madame Bernadette Chirac, September 10, 1995.
85. Jean Tiberi, Mayor of Paris, inaugurates the Illuminations for 1995-1996.
86. Evening opening of the Arc de Triomphe.
87. February 14, 1996: The Champs Elysees celebrates Valentine's Day in a joint project with American Express
and all of the stores on the Champs Elysees.
88. Grand opening of the film "Les Caprices d'un Fleuve" at the Gaumont Marignan, starring and in the presence of Bernard Giraudeau
and Richard Bohringer, March 24, 1996 followed by an party at the Theatre du Rond Point des Champs Elysees.
89. The "Champs Elysees" magazine changes its format and is issued twice a year of 52 pages.
90. Award ceremony for the Jean Gabin Prize and the Romy Schneider Prize at the Warwick Champs-Elysees.
91. Sculpture exhibition between the Rond Point des Champs Elysees and the Place de la Concorde, April 11th through June 9th, 1996.
92. Grand opening of the film "Remake, Rome an Open City", at the Le Balzac cinema, in the presence of the film-makers and under the auspices of Jean Tiberi, Mayor of Paris, and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the twinning of Paris and Rome
, followed by an official dinner at the Bistro Romain, June 11th, 1996.
93. Official visit of a delegation from the city of Beijing to discuss and prepare a twinning with Wang Fujing Avenue.
94. Partnership with the Paris Film Festival at the Theatre du Rond-Point des Champs Elysees.
95. Since 1996, the Champs Elysees re-named 'Cinema Avenue' for the duration of the Paris Film Festival.
96. June 16th, 1996, Jean Tiberi, Mayor of Paris, unveils a plaque renaming the Champs Elysees.
97. Establishment of a ??? service with the Police Commissariat of the 8th District.
98. The Committee is not in favor of special bicycle lanes due to technical problems.

with the grand opening of the film "Right to Kill" at UGC Normandie and in the presence of the producer, Arnold Milchan
and under the auspices of Madam Bernadette Chirac and Mr. Alain Juppe, Prime Minister.
101. Gala dinner at Le Doyen and presentation of a check for 1.5 million Francs to Madam Pompidou for her foundation.
102. Asterix on the Champs Elysees for its 37th birthday, October 10, 1996.
103. Illuminations 1996-1997 held November 28, 1996.
104. Alain Delon 'flipped the switch' for Illuminations.
105. Champs Elysees celebrates Saint Nicolas on December 6, 1996.
106. The First Night of Perfume takes place on the Champs Elysees at Sephora, December 21, 1996 to celebrate the winter solstice.

108. Coordination of the 1 ½ hour television program "C'est a suivre" with Claude Serillon on the Champs Elysees,

109. Twinning with Nevski Perspective in Saint Petersburg, May 30, 1997.
110. Creation of the Association of Great Avenues of the World.
111. First competition of "Paintings on the Champs Elysees", June 14, 1997.
